Are You The S.W.A.T Team

Are You The S.W.A.T Team We Called?
Friday – After preparing a spyware destroyer CD chalk full of anti-virus, spyware cleaners, and a few albums for Clarissa, I made my way through the long-weekend traffic and made it home around 9PM. Ronald, Ted, Claire, and I went to Cheesecake Factory for dinner. We all got appetizers and split. The strawberry lemondade was horrible. Lately, I’ve been having bad luck with drinks.

Saturday – I went to lunch at the same Korean BBQ place that my parents took me to last time. It was only Ronald and we had a good conversation. Ronald didn’t like the place for two reasons, I felt. First, it was not all you can eat and therefore didn’t hold a candle to Ed’s K-Town joint. Second, they included gratuity with our check which he was turned off by. I was more confused than anything. It felt weird leaving the exact change. *shrug*

That night, Ted and I went with Claire to this block party in the artists’ district of downtown LA, called Connected. It had multiple live stages, DJ’s, a small art installation (on the support columns of a bridge no less, and vendors. It was nice to see at least one vendor with American Apparel t-shirts. AA is the best and it’s great to see them supported. I really liked the seal themed t-shirts but most were girl’s tees. Too bad. We didn’t stay long enough to justify the $20 per person admission fee though it was for a good cause, Sudan.

After, we went to Mr. Ramen. We each got a bowl of Miso Ramen and I got a half side of fried rice and some gyoza. I thought the gyoza sucked, the rice was decent, and the ramen good, but nothing to write home about. The ramen we had in Hawaii definitely trumps this place. At least the service was good.

Then we headed to West Hollywood to a house party at Ted’s co-workers house. I must say, it is a very nice apartment. Lots of living space and room for stuff. Hardwood floors, even a back patio area. The kitchen was way too small though. It was almost like it was an afterthought. A good time was had by all. I received a drunken phone call from Steph. She, Ronald, and Ed went to the Korean BBQ place and I guess they got liquored up. Awesome. I drove Ted’s car back to Monterey Park, where we made a quick pitstop at home so they could go to the restroom. Then off to Sav-On’s for some Dramamine.

Sunday – The Big Day. Woke up, got ready, and headed over to Ronald’s. After everyone arrived, we headed to Long Beach to embark on our special trip. At the sea-port, everyone was hungry so we ate at the cafe. Surprisingly they interesting burger choices such as Kobe Beef, Ostrich, and Buffalo. I got the Kobe Beef. A little dry, but yummy overall.

The ship was late but we eventually boarded. We stay on the top deck, in the front area of the ship. I did not throw up. Thank God! I think it was the medicine, or it could be that I am getting used to it? I hope the latter. On the boat, we met two funny girls named Marilee and … Oh boy, I forgot her name. Melissa? They were a nice, drunken, couple. They definitely were the highlight that morning.

We had lunch at the Busy Bee. It probably is the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at. It is akin to the movie whose title we cannot speak of. Yes, it’s that bad. Horrible service, soggy and greasy food (even for me), long waits, unattentive staff, just bad. We were outside on the patio and I had to try really hard not to warn people standing in line not to run and save themselves while they could. It hurt me to eat there. And it still hurts thinking about it. I forgot to mention, when we first arrived, Ted and I found a geocache!

After lunch, we rode bikes around the island. We really didn’t venture too far outside of Avalon. There is alot more to the island, I suspect, that we didn’t see. We passed the time after bike riding and before the ship departure, by drinking and eating appetizers at Luau Larry’s. The service was much better and they had cool drinks. I didn’t drink because I was afraid it might have a negative interaction with the motion-sickness medicine.

We lined up promptly at 9:15 PM. Little did we know, we’d be there until close midnight. Delay after delay turned a quick line-up to a 2.5 hour party filled with angry people, hot drinks, and the uninvited cold. At one point, the 5-0 were called. The three 50 year old, short, cops looked really menacing with their batons. Of course the ride back sucked too. We had one broken engine, just like the ride there so it took about 15-30 minutes longer. After we got back home, Ted and I went to IHOP for a really late meal.

Monday – I hung out with Ed all day. First we had lunch at The Wood Ranch Grill. We both had BBQ tri-tip with ranch fries. It was delicious, as was the hostess. After, we went to Laemmle’s to meet Claire. We watched an indie-film called “Saving Face” by first time director Alice Wu. The original plan was for Claire and I to see it, then various parties were added and removed. And after Ted and Steph couldn’t make it, it became just the three of us – a triad of fun! Oh, we got student priced tickets without having to show ID! We also were able to bring our coffee from next door inside. That theatre rocks for those two points alone. Oh yeah, back to the movie. Two thumbs up. Superb! You gotta go watch it. Thanks to Mido for telling me about it.

Steph and I had sushi at the Old Pasadena standby, Ari-Ya. Good as usual. We made our way back and then met everyone to go watch Madagascar at the Renaissance Theaters in Alhambra. Save yourself people. DO NOT watch this atrocious attempt at a film. I think I made better animation in my kindergarten flipbook projects. They should change their name to Nightmareworks Studios.

Today I had lunch with Dave B at this Mongolian BBQ place in the K-Mart plaza. 10 minutes into our meal he finds a green worm in his food! It was about an inch long and a quarter inch thick. The meal was comped and we were invited to eat anything we’d like. We lost our appetite. Unfortunately, I was still hungry so we went across the street to get some Blender’s. Red banana with honey and bee pollen. That hit the spot.

Know When To Hold ‘Em,

Know When To Hold ‘Em, Know When To Fold ‘Em

“I actually don’t have that many friends”

That’s something I hear quite often from some of the most popular people. The ones that do have lots of friends, generally have ones without much substance. They may be “clubbing” friends or “downtown” friends. With that said, why aren’t we better to each other? After not many friends comes no friends. And that’s just depressing.

“Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed, that is.”

Yoda is really wise. He should write a book.

I went to play poker in Carpinteria today courtesy of Dave Barcelona’s invitation. I wiped out three, count ‘em three, of his friends while he sat in the shadows grinnin’. Do you know how Dave plays video games? He told me today. He likes to hide in the bushes and then when you walk past, he jumps out and stabs you in the back. They have a term for this. It’s called “camper.” So I was up probably $20-30 bucks and then Dave pounces on me and takes me down. $94 pot! Good job, man.

Weekend at Mido’s You are

Weekend at Mido’s
You are supposed to think of the movie reference, “Weekend at Bernie’s.” Read it again if you didn’t. Got it? Nice. Let’s move on.

Thursday – Came home after work. Was dead tired. I am not sure why. Swung by Claire and Ronald’s house to say hi. Then made my way home.

Friday – My mom took me to the Amtrak station where I picked up roundtrip tickets (courtesy of Mido. The first of many treats!) at this machine. I have never seen marvel before. It was great. I hopped on the train and after a half an hour delay on top of the 2:45 hour train ride, I arrived in sunny and hot Downtown San Diego. Mido was already waiting for me and after some street negotiations, we made our way to StratEdge. What a cool company. I liked the tour by her enthusiastic and proud boss, Tim. Later we went to this awesome bread place that is like Corner Bakery, but better, called Panera. I wish they had one here in LA or SB. Then BBQ courtesy of Mido’s ex-housemate Liz. There was a mountain of steak. I was in heaven. Then we went to a improv comedy show at the National Comedy Theatre that is very similar to “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” I had a really good time. Very creative place to go.

Saturday – The only full day in SD! We spent the better half of the morning and afternoon in Mexico for some delicious spiney lobster. What’s the difference you ask? Mido will tell you that it’s larger than red lobster, which you find at … you guessed it, Red Lobster. All I know is it was delcious and the margaritas were easy to drink. Score.

On the way back, the onramp that would have taken us back home was blocked off with amarillo police tape. That started a Mexican adventure of street vendors, confusion, near peril, and finally victory.

That evening, we went to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza. Then we went toExtraordinary Desserts after. Sammy’s was good but Extraordinary Desserts was EXTRAORDINARY. I loved that place. It was very expensive though so it’s not an everyday thing. But maybe twice a year. Decadent. They even had their own gourmet teas and sweets. I bought the Romeo’s Passion. I brewed it today at work. It is sour which I should have expected with all the citrus fruit in it. It makes a tea that’s a beautiful pink/purple color. Never seen anything like that. Good stuff.

Sunday – Breakfast to go from Pike’s and then off to LA. Ted picked me up and we went to Little Tokyo to get those little red bean filled cakes. Then we hung out at my house while waiting for Clarissa and Ed to come back from their outting. Then Ronald came back from picking up his parents and we went to see Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith. Two thumbs up from me! Yardhouse for a late dinner then arrived back in Santa Barbara at 2AM.

Today I realized I lost about $330. How you ask? On the 18th, I exercised and sold my vested options. Today the price was a little higher. Bam, I am out $330. Oh well. I got my check in today though and deposited it. That made my bank account happy. Do you know how much that piece of paper cost me? $5 fee. What the hell?

Threadless is having a $10 sale on all their shirts until June 6th. Go buy now! I just picked up three shirts and used my Street Team points to save some dough.

I stayed at work until 8PM today. It sucked. I am so tired. It was needed though. I am not that fast testing so I have to make up for it. Besides, I was not here this weekend.

That’s all I have for now. I’ll add more if I remember.

Countdown Alright, I know. I’ve

Countdown
Alright, I know. I’ve let you all down. My fans. The ones that use my blog as their homepage. For that, I apologize. But it’s Monday, I am bored, and as LL Cool J said, “Don’t call it a comeback! I been here for years”

Friday – Ted said the only way he could wake up in time for his motorcycle class was if he went to sleep early and the only way he could do that was if he was drunk. Chance to get Ted drunk? Sure, I’m up for the “challenge.” So I went to visit him in Calabases and we had dinner at King’s Fish House. I love that place. The waiter sucked. He called me dude a lot. Alright, cool guy. After dinner, we went to the bar and Ted ordered:

Ted: Can I get an AMFBartender Chick: What?
Ted: AMF.
Bartender Chick: Uh can you speak up? A what?
Ted: (nervously) Adios Motherfuc…
Bartender: Oh, and AMF.

I made him pound it. Of course, he didn’t but he drank it in like 3 minutes. And that was the end of him

I drove back and hung out with Ronald.

Saturday – Big day! I went to Kimura’s retirement party. Mrs. Kimura taught calculus in high school. She had the most unusual teach methods. For example, you wouldn’t do an ounce of math the first 3 weeks you were there. She said that she was teaching us about life during that time. Some of the nerdier students used to complain to the math department chair. Whatever. Her methods worked. 96% AP passing rate. That’s really unbelievable. Ted and I saw all sorts of familiar faces. I did not recogize most of their names but the faces were familiar.

The shindig ended around 3. Ted and I went home to change then we went to Ronald’s house. We left for Glendale Galleria shortly after to return some stuff. Ronald ended up getting work clothes from the Gap. He was flirting with the old, sorry mature, cashier for a good 10 minutes. A transaction takes 2 minutes tops. I guess it takes an extra 8 to warm up to Granny Gap.

Then we went to CURRY HOUSE! So delicious. Get this, they got rid of their Triple Threat Pickle Tray. Remember? The good ol red, white, and green peppered whatever. Does anyone know what those things were? Onions, ginger, mysterious Japanese produce? Anyway, now it’s a single jar of this red stuff. Damnit. I went because Mido said they had some crazy crab special. Well guess what? They didn’t. I had the rice set instead with beef curry. Delicious.

That evening, I hung out with Claire and her friend who was visiting from D.C. Westwood parking is a rip-off.

Sunday – Church. Then lunch in Arcadia at this Korean tofu restaurant with the family. It was really good. Then Ronald’s house. We went to see Kingdom of Heaven in Pasadena. It sucked. Then had sushi at Ari-Ya. Dessert too! Yummy. Then I drove back to SB.

In other news – I was checking out Auditor today but my notebook couldn’t boot it. I am very sad. I was hoping it’d work so I could start learning about WEP cracking and all that other educational stuff. Oh well.

It’s going to be a really busy week at work. But after work on Thursday, I am going home to LA for the evening. Then I am driving to San Diego the next day to hang out with Mido. I haven’t seen her in like … forever. I better charge up the battery for my camera.

I am waiting for a shipment of Future Relic shirts to appear at Digital Gravel. It’s a little cheaper to order from them rather than direct from Future Relic. I guess buying in bulk has it’s positives.

I am eyeing a notebook bag from Waterfield. They are so hot. Unfortunately, very very expensive as well.

I need to start ebaying off some more of my stuff. I just have too much stuff. I don’t need all this.

That’s enough rambling for today.

Population Density and Sampling Today

Population Density and Sampling
Today was an average day. I got alot of stuff done, so that’s good. Had lunch at Pick Up Stix. And of course, I had enough left over for dinner! Score. Helped Nick and Michelle finish off a bottle of Symphony wine. Have any of you even heard of this? There is a grape called Symphony! Insane.

Here’s one of the many interesting tidbits from my book blink. Premise – They are talking about speed dating and the people involved.

“For example, if Mary said at the start of the evening that she wanted someone intelligent and sincere, that in no way means she’ll be attracted to only intelligent and sincere men. It’s just as likely that John, whom she likes more than anyone else, could turn out to be attractive and funny but not particularly sincere or smart at all. Second, if all the Men Mary ends up liking during the speed-dating are more attractive and funny than they are smart and sincere, on the next day, when she’s asked to describe her perfect man, Mary will say that she likes attractive and funny men. But that’s just the next day. If you ask her again a month later, she’ll be back to saying she wants intelligent and sincere.”

So what does this mean? I totally believe it to be true, especially in romance. Don’t we have this inexpicable attraction to people and when people ask us who our perfect girlfriend is, we start describing our crush, despite the fact that they often don’t exhibit all the characteristics we previously deemed necessary for compatibility?

Two cool things for you guys to check out today. First is a small design company out of New York called Future Relic. They make some really creative t-shirt commentaries on our country, its politics, and culture. I just ordered the Population Density in a Medium. Look at it closely for a bit, it’ll come to you. Others worth mentioning are the 2nd Amendment and the Surrender shirts. I am waiting for both to come back into stock at Digital Gravel so I can buy them cheaper!

Second, we all know that some of the most popular music of the last 20 years has borrowed generously from the past. Here’s an interesting visual representation of the History of Sampling. It’s interesting to see how things are connected. I must admit, after playing with this for 15 minutes, I still don’t entirely get how it works. Hopefully, you’ll have better luck.
