Torino 2006 – The Big American Olympic Letdown

I have been waiting a long time for these Winter Olympic Games. Something like four years! Each night as I am sleeping, my ReplayTV records anywhere between 3 and 5 hours of coverage. The next day, I rush home from work and plop on my couch for an abridged update of the previous day’s events.

So far things have been great. The athletes are doing well, there are few (*ahem* Austria) scandals, and everything is well run. You gotta hand it to the Italians. They really are a great host country.

My only complaint is the performance of the Americans. Not only the performance, but the attitudes. So many “bad boys” of this and that. So many “I am going to win Gold” attitudes. So much public boasting. All without delivery. The bad boy of skiing Bode Miller. The selfish Shani Davis (who also cannot speaks like an idiot). The idiot Lindsey Jacobellis (who to this day still is making excuse to jusify her behavior).

With established stars Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves , and up-and-comers such as Ted Ligety , Lindsey Kildow and Julia Mancuso , the U.S. Ski Team was feeling pretty good about these Olympics.

How good? The advertised goal for the American men and women was eight medals, the motto “Best in the World.”

So far they have one.

It really is becoming embarassing. These athletes need to start delivering or they need to shut up.
