Movie Weekend

This weekend, I saw two movies on DVD.

Snow Walker – 4.5 of 5 Stars

I kept reading good reviews for this 2004 movie starring Berry Pepper on IMDB. One reviewer even said that when people walk into his video store, he asks them if they have ever seen it and if they say no, he high recommends it. I don’t have much of an opinion of Berry Pepper except I recogize him as “that guy.” He was most notably in “We Were Soldiers” with Mel Gibson.

Anyway, the story is about this cocky WWII pilot who now flies privately in the Canadian Artic region. While transporting a sick Eskimo girl, the plane crashes and now he has to rely on her for survival. It’s beautifully shot. Throughout the movie, you are tempted to pause it and just admire the shot. The stills could easily be made into prints for display. It’s a very cool story of how people change during dire situations.
Flight of the Phoenix – 3.5 of 5 stars

This is a remake of the 1965 film of the same name. It is a story of a bunch of ragtag oil rig workers whose location got shut down for not striking black gold. Dennise Quaid and Tyrese are from corporate and they need to take the crew and equipment back to China. They quickly enter a storm which proves to be impassible and they soon crash into the Gobi dessert. They have to rebuild their plane if they hope to get out.

I actually liked this movie. Half of the characters had good development. The ones that counted, I guess. The movie showed what people will do when they are desperate. And it show how everyone has different reactions to things. I though Giovanni Ribisi did a great job. You would not recognize him in this movie with his altered voice, dyed hair, and mannerisms. Supposedly, the original is supposed to be much better. Oh well, I guess I’ll never know.
