KJEE Summer Roundup Episode II

Summer Roundup Thumb

Last week, I heard about KJEE’s Summer Roundup. Having gone to the end all of rock concerts (Weenie Roast with Ted), I looked at this as Santa Barbara’s mini roast. A few convincing nods toward Kelly in between rounds of Taboo sealed the deal. Despite the show being sold out, she was able to score tickts.

Yesterday morning, I got a call from her and ended up meeting her and Tem at the Brown Pelican for lunch. It was a good meal, and the restaurant is right on the beach. After, she and I went downtown and did some shopping. I saw lots of cool stuff I want to go back and check out. The Levi’s store is open finally, something I’ve been looking forward to for a while. The last Levi’s store I went to, I can’t remember. But the one before that was in Barcelona. Levi’s definitely has the staying power that is characteristic of any real powerhouse brand. They’ll be around for another 100 years, easily.

We met Tem and had a late lunch at the Nordstom Cafe. Again, another first for me. After, we went to Kelly’s house and hung out for a bit then walked to the bowl. It’s about a 4-5 block walk but still a great idea because the parking is easy and free at her place. We get there about an hour late and miss the first set which predictably would be the least well known band (yet everyone’s most anticipated), Hard-Fi. Damn.

The rest of the night was a whirlwind adventure and definitely the most interesting concert I’ve been to. The music was tuned just right and the acoustics were dead on. Every single band that came on rocked the house and they were just giving flawless performances. There was plenty of alcohol and craziness involved (not me, I swear) and I met all sorts of people.

Before The Strokes started their set, I looked over 3 feet behind me and saw a guy in a tailored shirt and a blazer. I was thinking, “Man, this guy is out of place, but I give him props for dressing well.”  A few minutes later, I was like “Who is this cat?” Then it hit me. It was Paul Walker. 2 Fast, 2 Furious baby. The got was totally cool. Smiling the whole time. Not a care in the world. Completely respectful.

After the last song, we made our way down the hill and back to Kelly’s. She ordered Rusty’s and we ravaged it. Whew.
