West Point Thesis Argues For Gays in the Military

This West Point graduate, who now is a 2nd lieutenant of a MP detail in Kanas, wrote a senior thesis advocating the inclusion of gays in the military. The article is quite good but the last paragraph is what struck me as the most interesting. Did you know there was such a thing as the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military? I sure as hell didn’t. I am not arguing the need for such a place (obviously there is), but it just seemed so random.

“I think that this award symbolizes a shift in military culture,” said Aaron Belkin, director of the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military, a think tank at the University of California at Santa Barbara. “Raggio was brave enough to write about it in the first place, but the fact that West Point would give him an award for challenging the gay ban is a powerful indication of how far the military has come culturally.”
