Suzanne Vega – Beauty & Crime

Admittedly, I’ve never heard of Suzanne Vega, but after listening to her upcoming album “Beauty & Crime,” I wish I had discovered her earlier.  With a career that spans over 20 years, Vega’s seventh album revolves around the theme of her native New York City.  I’m not old enough to remember her hit “Tom’s Diner” but I can comment on her latest 11 songs.  The lyrics are quite a departure from the dumbed down ones playing on the Top 20 stations while maintaining the fun, light-hearted sound that makes pop songs so appealing.  Her voice is quite attractive and you can tell she has a nice range, though she doesn’t really exploit it.  Backed by her acoustic guitar, her songs can be described as folk-inspired but unlike most songs in that genre, hers don’t make me sleepy or depressed. For a bonus fun fact- her song “Tom’s Diner” was used by the creator of MP3 compression to develop the codec! Her album comes out July 17. I’d suggest you pick up a copy!
