Totoraku

Look, I am not even supposed to talk about this place but I feel like I have to at least mention it. I first heard about it on one of the foodie sites like eGullet, Yelp, or Chow Hound. Anyway, it’s this super secret, nondescript, invite-only, Japanese BBQ joint somewhere in LA. So I went asking around and, of course, none of my friends in SB had a clue. I even sent out a bulletin at work to reach a wider audience, to no avail. As luck would have it, I asked Karen and though she’d never heard of it, she was unsurprisingly confident she could score a reservation (or ressie as she calls them). Well, as luck would have it, her aunt was entering the ’sacred circle’ that weekend and after some back and forth, a month, I was able to dine there mid January of this year.

How was it? Everything I had hoped and more. Everything was succulent, juicy, and extremely flavorful. Beef tongue? Bring it. Beef throat? Put it on my plate. Even the little side of tomatoes was delicious. At the end of my meal, the chef came out and asked how everything was. I asked for his card and he gave it to me so you know what that means …

Price: $120 per person + tax and tip. BYOB. Note: I actually was treated to this meal. I think normally it’s a bit more, too.
